These basic troubleshooting steps may resolve or more accurately diagnose keyboard problems and can be used with most keyboards. Always turn off the computer before disconnecting or connecting anything from the back of the computer.

1. Verify the keyboard has a good connection with the computer. Disconnect and reconnect the keyboard on the back of the computer. With the keyboard cable unplugged, look down into the cable end. Check for any bent or broken pins within the cable. If there are any bent pins, carefully straighten them with a small pair of needle-nose pliers.

2. If you have an extension cable for the keyboard, try plugging the keyboard directly in to the computer without the extension cable.

3. If the keyboard is connected into a switch box, try plugging the keyboard directly in to the computer to see if it works.

4. If the keyboard is attached to an adapter cable, try using another adapter cable to see if the keyboard works.

5. If anything is spilled on the keyboard or the keyboard is left uncovered for long periods of time, the keys may become sticky or dirty. This can cause the keyboard not to function properly. Try to clean the keyboard with a can of compressed air.

6. Try a different keyboard on the computer to see if another keyboard will work. If the new keyboard works, the original keyboard may be defective. If another keyboard does not work, the motherboard may be defective.

7. To further test the keyboard, try taking it to another computer to see if it works. If the original keyboard works on another computer, the motherboard may defective. If the original keyboard does not work on another computer, the keyboard may be defective.
