Like DNS names, NetBIOS names have to be converted into IP addresses in order for systems to communicate on a TCP/IP network. The Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) is a NetBIOS name server that registers the names and addresses of computers as they log on to the network, and resolves names into addresses as needed.
