Using WINS
When you install Windows NT, you specify a name for the computer called a NetBIOS name, which uniquely identifies that system to the network. When you use the TCP/IP protocol with Windows NT, the NetBIOS names must be resolved into their IP addresses before any communications commence. The Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) is a NetBIOS name server that registers the names and addresses of computers as they log on to the network, and resolves names into addresses as needed.
