The time and date stamp helps identify files, gives additional information to the logging operations for various programs (so you can track what happened when), and provides the accurate time for Email and postings you send. Like other things hardware, different things can affect the PC's ability to keep the right time – a failing CMOS battery, a conflicting program, a BIOS clock date that's been set wrong.
