Footnotes, References & Field Codes
Any scholarly document and many long documents require the use of footnotes or endnotes. Writers commonly use cross-references in documents to refer readers to related materials within the document. Word includes a powerful cross-reference feature, which you can create as a hyperlink to make it easy for readers to review the related material. Field codes represent information that is subject to change, like page numbers. When that information changes, Word updates the fields for you automatically.
