Change Color or Wallpaper

Tutorial Home >Operating Systems >Windows Me >Using and Diagnosing Windows Me >Customize Your Desktop >Change Color or Wallpaper

  Step 1:  Display the Properties

Open a Report
You use the properties (options) for the desktop to change how it looks and, in some cases, how it acts. You can display the properties in two ways. As shown here, right-click the desktop, then click Properties. Or, choose Start (click the Start button on the taskbar), Settings, Control Panel, and then double-click the Display icon. Either way, the Display Properties dialog box opens. (Your display properties may differ depending on the video card and monitor installed in your system.)
Step 2:  Choose a Wallpaper Style

Open a Report
Windows ships with numerous image files you can apply to the desktop as wallpaper (the background). Picture files stored in the \My Documents\My Pictures folder appear in the wallpapers list; you also can select an image file stored elsewhere on your computer. To select a wallpaper, click it in the Select a Background Picture or HTML Document as Wallpaper list on the Background tab or use the Browse button to select it. Click the arrow for the Picture Display drop-down list, and click a choice.
  Step 3:  Choose a Pattern

Open a Report
If you prefer to display a repeating pattern to fill the desktop, click the Pattern button on the Background tab. (Hint: Click the None choice at the top of the Select a Background Picture or HTML Document as Wallpaper list if the Pattern button isn't active.) In the Pattern dialog box, scroll down the Pattern list by clicking the arrow at the bottom of the scroll bar to the right of the list, click the pattern you want to apply, then click OK to return to the Display Properties dialog box.
Step 4:  Choose Another Color Scheme

Open a Report
If you're bored with the standard colors used by Windows and Windows applications, you can change them. Click the Appearance tab in the Display Properties dialog box to display color choices, including color schemes. Each scheme is a collection of color, font (text), and sizing settings for the desktop and applications. To choose a new scheme, open the Scheme drop-down list and click the scheme to use. (Hint: Click the downward-pointing arrow for any drop-down list to open the list.)
Step 5:  Change an Item's Settings

Open a Report
Whether you select a color scheme or not, you can change the color and other settings used for a particular onscreen item like the desktop, scroll bars, window title bars and borders, and so on. Choose the item to change from the Item drop-down list. Then, change any of the settings that appear for the item as needed. (Note: If your wallpaper fills the desktop, you won't see the desktop color.)
  Step 6:  Save the Scheme

Open a Report
After you make changes to the appearance of numerous onscreen items, you can save those changes as your own color scheme for later use. To do so, click the Save As button on the Appearance tab. Enter a name for the new scheme in the Save This Color Scheme As text box of the Save Scheme dialog box, then click OK.
  Step 7:  Apply Your Settings

Open a Report
Click OK in the Display Properties dialog box to apply the changes to the desktop appearance and close the dialog box.
