  Step 1:  Working on Rotations

Hard drives work on a rotations per minute basis, an ever-increasing number that the main companies are coming out with for many reasons. The faster the RPM, the faster data can be written to the hard drive and accessed from the hard drive.
Step 2:  Factor #1 against Disk Speed

If you are running low on disk space, your drive will work at a slower speed to compensate.
Step 3:  Factor #2 against Disk Speed

RAM is a big issue, since RAM will use hard drive space to help it work. The more RAM you have, the better its ability to work without the hard drive.
Step 4:  Factor #3 against Disk Speed

If your drive is fragmented, then your drive performance will be slower than it should be. Taking the time to optimize your drive will increase your ability to handle audio files.
