  Step 1:  Softball sans Suds

While baseball might be the American pastime, softball is how millions of adults spend their recreational time. Without the need for lightning reflexes or blazing fastballs, the slow-pitch game is a relaxing, summertime social event. For those wishing to replicate the experience in a virtual mode, 3DO's Sammy Sosa Softball Slam fills the bill. Just like the playground counterpart, astronomical scores are the norm and nobody is around to witness the embarrassment of swinging and missing.

Leagues and tournaments can be setup and player rosters edited. Several "stadium" locales are modeled, including city and suburban parks. Games can be played in either day or night settings. Players themselves can have their abilities edited, and there is three skill levels of play. Needless to say, it is far less difficult to hit a slow, arcing softball than a pro-ball slider. There is even a replay option to revisit those special moments of athletic brilliance.
  Step 3:  And Misses!

A serious sports sim this is not. Blazing throws, well, blaze (as in aflame). Sammy Sosa joining your after-work softball league is a rather weak excuse to use his name to sell a product. In fact, the mere premise of virtual softball ranks right up there with virtual Frisbee, virtual curling, and virtual candlelight bowling. 3DO tries to compensate by making the game more action oriented, but never really fires on all cylinders.
  Step 4:  The Bottom Line

Graphically, the game is very average, not up to par with even mid-range baseball sims on the market. Sonically, it's abysmal. Again, the premise of an announcer at your Friday park district league is a stretch, having an announcer that would make bad nightclub DJs blush is really over the top. If you really love your softball and think the concept is cool, by all means give it a try. If you're looking for a good sports game, this isn't it.
