Step 1:  Take a Look Around

Before you can look for a discount on a cruise, you need to decide what kind of cruise you want to take. In some cases, you may be extremely flexible and are willing to consider most any cruise regardless of location, duration, type of ship, or level of luxury. But most people will have at least some preferences, so it's a good idea to make basic decisions before you start looking for bargains.
  Step 2:  Pick a Location

There are cruises to nearly everywhere there is water, but the Caribbean, Mexico, and Alaska are the most popular destinations for people residing in North America. You can also take a cruise to more exotic destinations as well, including Europe, South America, the South Pacific, Asia, or even around the world.
  Step 3:  Pick a Length

The typical cruise is about a week in length, but you can take anything from a mini-cruise of a few days to a world cruise lasting 100 days or more. A lot depends on how much time you have, whether you've cruised before (you might want to try out a shorter cruise before sailing around the world), and what the standard length is for the destination you've chosen.
  Step 4:  Pick a Style

Cruises come in a variety of styles, from very basic to highly luxurious. How much you want to spend will, of course, play a role in determining which style of cruise you take. There are other factors of style outside of price though. There's a big difference between a "fun" cruise with lots of activities and games and an intellectual cruise that focuses on learning about your destination from varying experts. Be sure to determine the goal and focus of any cruise before choosing it based on price alone.
  Step 5:  Pick a Ship

You don't necessarily need to choose the exact ship you want to sail on unless you have very specific requirements, but you should at least give some thought as to whether you want to sail on a very large ship with lots of amenities or a smaller, sailing-type vessel. If you're planning to cruise overseas another consideration is whether the majority of lectures and activities will be in English or another language.
