| Listen to the quality of the connection on voice phone calls. Also check to see if you hear static when you first pick up the handset or immediately after you finish dialing a number. Excessive noise or static may interfere with data connections including faxing and cause a slower connection rate. |

| Check the phone lines visible to you for signs of excessive wear. If they look very old, or damaged, replacing them may mean better overall service as well as better data connection speed for analog fax modems. |

| Talk with those who live or work close to you who communicate by analog modem. Are they getting connection speeds as low as yours? If not, you may have old phone wires in your home (or on the outside of your home) that interfere with a good connection. Contact the phone company. |

| Contact the support number for your phone service and advise them of the excessive noise you are hearing on the line. Investigate options available for trying to reduce the noise on the line, including a "line cleaning" performed by the phone company itself and line conditioning (equipment installed to filter noise). |
