 | | See if you can temporarily work around the error and get the system to boot. If possible, go into CMOS (by typing the keystrokes indicated on your boot-up screen for going into Setup) and jot down information on your configuration (a bad battery may cause CMOS to lose this information). | | | |
 | | Consult your PC manual, and then go to an electronics store or department to obtain a new CMOS battery. These are usually thick, dime-sized batteries costing between $3 and $10. | | | |

 | | Shut your PC down, disconnect the power, remove the cover, and ground yourself before you place your hands inside the PC. | | | |

 | | Locate the CMOS battery on your motherboard (consult the documentation or manufacturer's web site, if necessary). It is usually held in place by a small clip. Once you locate it, gently lift the clip and extract the current battery. Then slide the new battery into position, and ease the clip back into place to hold the battery. | | | |
 | | When complete, replace the PC cover, restore power connections, and turn on the PC. You should now be able to boot without error. You may, however, need to re-enter CMOS Setup to fix the time and date to appropriate settings, and check for other information that may have been lost because of the failing battery. | |
