Whenever you are troubleshooting your laser printer, power down the printer through the on/off switch and then disconnect the power cord. Do not pull the cord from the outlet or turn off a power strip that the printer is connected to; always power down through the on/off switch first.

Most printers use a parallel cable to communicate with your computer. A parallel cable that supports bi-directional communications is best; you can usually identify these as IEEE-1284 cable.

Modern computers utilize parallel ports that allow for bi-directional communication; this is sometimes referred to as nibble mode. To ensure that computer is using this port open the system BIOS. To open the BIOS, restart your computer and watch the startup sequence. As the computer begins to boot you'll see a message that tells you which key(s) to press to enter setup. Usually, it's the F1 key, or the delete key, although yours may be different.

Once the BIOS is open, find the category that manages your ports. Your LPT port which connects to your printer should be configured to use ECP or EPP operation. Most modern computers will use ECP. If necessary, make any changes and then save the settings and exit. Your computer will reboot using the new BIOS settings that you've set.
