Step 1:  Causes of Memory Overload

If your resources constantly fall below 50 percent, adding more random access memory (RAM) may be one way to counter the problem. But what if you can't install more memory? Then reducing the demands your computer makes on RAM is one way to manage your resources resourcefully. Some of the causes are easily solved, while others require additional knowledge and tactics.
Step 2:  Get Rid of Frills

The fancier the wallpaper, the more memory it eats up. Go back to a plain desktop. You can do this by right-clicking on the desktop and choosing Properties. Select the Background tab and choose (None) from the options. Click Apply to remove your wallpaper.
Step 3:  Get Rid of the Screen Saver

Screen Savers are amusing, but they utilize a great deal of RAM. In the Display Properties dialog box, click on the Screen Saver tab. In the Screen Saver section choose (None). In the Energy saving features of the monitor section, click on the Power or Settings button (depending on your version of Windows®) and set the number of minutes you want the computer to wait before turning off the computer when you aren't using it.
  Step 4:  Eliminate Startup Programs

Many programs needlessly launch upon Windows startup, each one of them using up the system memory. Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up Task Manager, and take note of all the programs running. Click Start, Run and type msconfig in the field. You can use Msconfig to prevent programs from launching. If you do not have Msconfig, then open each program individually and uncheck the Launch at Startup box.
