  Step 1:  No Standards Yet

Although MP3 is the recognized format standard right now, no formal standard has been set for how these files are named. The standard is in the process of being set, but no time frame has yet been given.
Step 2:  Start Right and Stick With It

Because there is no standard, you must create your own file identification system and continue to use it in order to maintain consistency.
Step 3:  Let the CDDB Do the Work

The Compact Disc Database (CDDB) is the largest music database in the world which has song information on most every CD ever created. When you rip a file from your CD to MP3, the ripper program will access the CDDB to find out the song title, the artist and album. This information will then be ascribed automatically to the name of the file.
Step 4:  Be Sure You're Connected

When you are ripping a song from a CD and you are not connected to the Internet, then the ripping program will assign a name based on what track number is on the CD. This is the only information the program has to use when creating a name. You will have to go back and manually add the artist's name, and track and album titles. In this case you can see an album ripped while offline.
