 | | Microsoft Windows, Internet Explorer, and ActiveX are interrelated and complex. Since they are used in connecting to the Internet, they need to be secure. But with any program that is so large and complex, bugs or weaknesses can be found. Security is an ongoing process. Someone reports a problem, and Microsoft publishes a patch for it. |  |  | | 

 | | If you are running Windows XP, left-click on Start, select All Programs, scroll up to Windows Update, and left-click on it. If you are running Windows 98, left-click on Start, scroll up to Windows Update, and left-click on it. If you are running Windows 95, open your web browser and go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com. |  |  | | 

 | | Left-click on Product Updates to have your system scanned for necessary updates. |  |  | | 

 | | The critical updates section includes necessary security updates for both the Windows operating system and Internet Explorer. Select critical updates by checking the box next to them. Some of them may require you to not have any others selected. If that is the case, install those, then redo this tutorial to install the rest. |  |  | | 

 | | When you have selected the updates you want, left-click on Download. This will download the patches, and automatically install them. Some of the patches will require you to read a notice, and click on Accept, to proceed. |  |  | | 

 | | Most of the patches will require you to restart your computer for them to take effect. Restart your computer now. |  |
