  Step 1:  Choose Status

Open a Report
TurboTax presents you with a list of five options for Filing Status. If you transferred information from last year's tax return, the status will already be selected for you, however you have the right to change that information in necessary. Click on the status that best describes your situation.
  Step 2:  Get Help

Open a Report
Not sure which filing status is right for you? Click the Guide Me option and TurboTax will ask some questions geared to helping you figure out which status to use.
  Step 3:  Indicate Marital Status

Open a Report
If you clicked on Guide Me, you will be asked to choose from four options that describe your marital status. Filing status isn't exactly the same as marital status, but the two are closely related. Click Continue to go on to the next screen.
  Step 4:  Answer the Questions

Open a Report
Based on the marital status you indicated, you will be asked a series of questions pertaining to whether or not you support a dependent, pay the cost of maintaining your home, lived without a spouse for a certain period of time. Your answers to these questions will provide TurboTax with enough information to recommend the filing status that will provide the lowest tax rate to you.
  Step 5:  Change Your Mind

Open a Report
The filing status you choose can be changed. If you decide you want to change your status (from married filing separately to head of household, for example), you can return to this area of the Interview by opening My Tax Data and finding the marital status information, which is located near the top of the My Tax Data list. Or, you can open the 1040 tax form and check the box right on the tax form for the status you want.
