Step 1:  Focus on the HTML Title

Open a Report
Much of the traffic to your site is likely to come from search engines, which means the HTML title is the most important part of the page. The HTML title is not a document name. It's the coded name that search engines list as the linked words in their lists of matches and that they give top priority to when answering queries. If someone does a search and the words they are looking for appear in your HTML title, it is likely that your page will come out near the top in the results list.
Step 2:  Enter the HTML Title

Open a Report
In Word 95 and Word 6.0, click on File, then HTML Document Information. In Word 97, click on File, then Properites. Enter your title there. Word it carefully. Don't waste space on your name or your company's name. Use only words that are significant for search purposes -- that people wanting to see the information on your page might enter as a query at a search engine.
Step 3:  Focus on the First Text

Open a Report
The second most important part of your page, from the perspective of search engines, is the first couple lines of text. That is what will appear in search listings as the description of your page. And those words also have very high priority in determining how high your page may appear in a list of search lists. Be clear and precise. Every word counts. Avoid useless words like "welcome."
Step 4:  Alert the Search Engines

Open a Report
As soon as you finish a page, go to AltaVista, click on Add URL at the bottom on their home page, and enter the Web address of your new page. Do that for each and every page. The other search engines are much slower to respond to requests to add pages to their indexes. Once you have your whole site together, go to the other important ones, like Excite, HotBot, Lycos, Northern Light, and Google, and enter your home page. From that starting point, they should eventually find the rest of your site.
