Step 1:  How Safe Sites Are Picked

When searching for information on the Web with a kid-friendly search engine, your results should be G-rated. Below is a list of criterion that most safe search engines employ when sifting through the Web for kid-safe sites. Keep in mind that a bit of awareness on your part never hurts, since it is always possible that material you consider objectionable might turn up even on a safe search.
  Step 2:  E-Commerce Sites

Safe search engines bypass commercial sites that only offer particular product/ordering information. However, commercial sites that offer kid-relevant entertainment or educational information are often included.
  Step 3:  Bad Privacy

Sites that are clearly not looking out for child privacy should not be part of a safe search engine. If a site is asking for a child's name, address or phone number, they have no business being catalogued as a child-friendly site. If you come across such a site, a quick e-mail to the search engine's customer service department is in order.
Step 4:  Sites That Charge a Fee

When it comes to kids sites, free access is the rule of thumb. Therefore, a safe search should not offer any sites that require a fee to access.
  Step 5:  Violence-Free

Sites that peddle violence and aggression, or advocate negative intentions, are banned from kid search engines.
  Step 6:  Religious Sites

Even if you do not subscribe to the teachings of the Koran, such sites can be accessed using a safe search engine. As long as the site does not espouse violence, bigotry or hatred, religious sites are included in safe searches.
  Step 7:  Touchy Social Issues

Safe search engines will include sites that deal objectively with major social issues such as alcoholism, child abuse, homosexuality, drug abuse, AIDS, etc. Although these are topic of often fierce debate, sites that deal with such issues in an understandable, unbiased manner are included as informational material.
