  Step 1:  Learning About SearchGuard

If you already use Lycos to search the Web and like its results, try SearchGuard for the kids. Like other search engines, its aim is to lessen the odds that get you and your kids the most relevant Internet information, while filtering out objectionable content. SearchGuard, formerly Safety Net, gets consistent top-honors among child-safety folk, it is free and it is easy to implement.
  Step 2:  Finding SearchGuard

SearchGuard can be found at www.lycos.com/parentalcontrol/. Here's how it works. Offensive words are dropped from search queries. Sites that contain inappropriate or offensive material are also removed. Furthermore, you can remove the ability for your children to access chat, e-mail or bulletin boards online.
  Step 3:  Activating SearchGuard

Access SearchGuard's home page. Logging on is as easy as entering your password. Once, inside, choose the types of content you would like to screen out from the following list: E-mail, message boards and chatrooms, Violent content, Hate and racist content, Weapons-related content, and Sexual content.
Step 4:  Limitations to Safe Searching

Like any safe search engine, it is possible that objectionable or inappropriate material might slip through the cracks. The strongest feature of these devices is their ability to completely disable high-risk items like e-mail and chatrooms, where the majority of major online offenses to children originate. So look at safe search engines as only one tool among many that help your kids stay safe on the Net.
