  Step 1:  Chat Overview

Investment chats give you an opportunity to discuss investment ideas and strategies with like-minded people. You can also participate in chats with investment experts and authors who want to interact with readers and promote their books. As with discussion groups, be sure to independently research any advice offered by an unknown source.
  Step 2:  Find Chats

Popular chat sites such as Yahoo! Chat (chat.yahoo.com) and TalkCity (www.talkcity.com) frequently have investment-related chats. Personal finance magazines and sites also often sponsor chats with their editors or other experts. In addition, there are dozens of chat sites devoted specifically to investing. Go to your favorite search engine and do a search on "investment chat" to get a list of available chats. Note: Even if you miss a chat, you can often find an archive of what was discussed.
  Step 3:  Chat Tips

If you've ever participated in another type of online chat, you'll already be familiar with how online investment chats work. Investment chats are supposed to be "professional" chats, but the same warnings and cautions apply about protecting your personal and financial security. In general, chats sponsored by well-known sites offering industry experts or authors as guests are probably the most valuable.
  Step 4:  Chat Warnings

Some things to keep in mind to protect your privacy (and money) in online chats: Never use your full real name. Use only your first name or a nickname to protect your anonymity. Never give out your email address (or home address) to an unknown person you meet in a chat. It could be sold or you could start receiving volumes of unwanted mail. And definitely avoid revealing credit card or other personal financial information.
