  Step 1:  The Very Start

Video began becoming popular in the 1980s as the price of Video Camcorders dropped significantly. The lower cost meant the average consumer could afford to participate in the video revolution.
  Step 2:  VHS tapes

Analog recording is used for VHS tapes. These are the tapes used in modern VCRs that are in most homes, as well as the large Video Recorders.
  Step 3:  Modern Camcorders

Modern camcorders use a form of tape called 8MM or HI-8MM. Theses tapes are smaller, able to record a higher quality of image, and are also more expensive.
  Step 4:  Costs of Equipment

While they are less expensive, VHS tapes do not match the quality of Hi-8MM tapes. Also, Hi-8 cameras are smaller and more manageable.
  Step 5:  Digital Video

Around 1998, digital video cameras dropped into the price range of the consumer. These cameras were able to provide a sharper image and more clarity than any conventional tape, through the use of digital recording.
