Hard Drive Spins Up, Not Seen
Tutorial Home >Hardware >Storage and Drives >Hard Drives >How do I find out what to do if my hard drive spins, but is not seen? Tutorial Home >Hardware >Storage and Drives >Hard Drives >Hard Drives: Serious Errors >Hard Drive Spins Up, Not Seen | |

 | | Turn off the PC, disconnect power connections, remove the cover, and ground yourself before placing your hands inside the PC. | | | |

 | | Check the ribbon cable running from the motherboard to the drive (and from one drive to another drive, if applicable) to make certain it's both secure and installed properly. If the cable looks worn or damaged, try a different cable. | | | |

 | | Check the jumpers located on the back of the drive. If the drive is to your boot hard drive without another drive attached off of it, the jumper should be set to C or CS for Cable Select. If it's the first of two drives attached to one another, it should be set to M for Master. Change the jumper, if needed, by moving the black plastic shunt off the wrong setting and placing it over the correct one. | | | |

 | | Replace the PC cover, reconnect the power, insert a good bootable floppy disk in the A drive, and turn the PC on. | | | |

 | | Locate a recent copy of FDISK.EXE and load it by typing FDISK at the command prompt. In FDISK, make certain you see at least one DOS partition, and that FDISK reports there is a primary partition that is both active and bootable. If not, you need to repartition the drive, and then reformat it before you install the operating system again. | | | |
 | | If problems continue past repartitioning and reformatting, try a different disk. If that one works properly, the problematic hard drive should be replaced. Contact the manufacturer if the drive (or your whole PC) is still under warranty. | |
