Tutorial Home >Operating Systems >Windows 9x >Microsoft Windows 98 >Using Internet Explorer 4 >Search for a Site

  Step 1:  Start a Search

Open a Report
To find sites related to your topic, you can use one of several search services available on the Internet. Click the Search button on the toolbar. A Search bar appears on the left side of the Internet Explorer window. The content area takes up a larger space on the right.
Step 2:  Choose a Search Engine

Open a Report
The first time you use Explorer's search function, you have to click the Choose a Search Engine link to view a list of search services in the content area. Click the name of the service you want to try. The new search service will appear in the Search bar on the left.
Step 3:  Type the Search Text

Open a Report
Type the text that you want to search for (your entry might consist of one or more words), and then click the Search button. (Depending on which service you use, the button might have a different label, such as Find, Seek, or Go Get It.)
  Step 4:  Select a Site

Open a Report
The search service provides a list of sites that contain the target words. Some of the sites might relate to your search, and others might not. Click the name of a site that you want to visit.
  Step 5:  Click a Link

Open a Report
The site might contain the information you're looking for, or it could contain one or more links that you'll want to investigate. Click any link to jump to another site or page.
Step 6:  Try a Different Search Service

Open a Report
Optionally, try a different search service. Click the Choose a Search Engine control. Note that a drop-down list appears, showing all the previous search engines you have used, with a connection to the List of All Search Engines. Select a service, and enter the target text. Then click Search to see what resources the new services can provide.
