| You can use Windows Explorer to search for files on your computer. Click the Start button and choose Programs, and then choose Windows Explorer. The Explorer window opens on the desktop. |

| When you start Explorer, it displays two panes of information. On the left, you see the hierarchy of folders on your current disk. To open a folder and view its contents, click the folder in the list on the left. In response, the pane on the right displays all the files contained in the folder you selected. A folder containing an additional structure of folders is marked by a plus sign in the left pane. To view the folder structure, click the plus sign. |

| To display or hide toolbars, pull down the View menu and choose Toolbars. Click the down-arrow button just to the right of the Views button to see the options for representing files in the Explorer window. Choose Large Icons, Small Icons, or List to view each file as an icon; choose Details to view a table of information. |

| Files in the contents list can be displayed as icons or as individual lines in a detailed table of descriptive information. They can be arranged by name, size, type, or date. To change the order in which files are displayed in the right-hand pane, pull down the View menu and choose Arrange Icons. Then choose one of the options in the resulting submenu or click the heading at the top of any column in Details view to change the order. |

| Use your mouse to drag the file from the right-hand pane to the appropriate disk icon in the pane on the left. Explorer copies the file to the destination disk. To move a file to a new folder on the same disk, drag the file from one folder to another; in this case, the file disappears from the source and is moved to the destination. |

| To start a program, click its icon in the right-hand pane. To open a document, click its icon; Windows 98 starts the appropriate application and opens the document. |
