MPEG (Moving Pictures Experts Group) is a group of people that meet under ISO (the International Standards Organization) to generate standards for digital video (sequences of images in time) and audio compression. They define a compressed bit stream, which implicitly defines a decompressor. However, the compression algorithms are up to the individual manufacturers, and that's where proprietary advantage is obtained within the scope of a publicly available international standard.

In the age of legal issues that arise as a result of obscure patents, MPEG copyrights is an important issue. The core technology of MPEG includes patents from many different companies and individuals around the globe, but the MPEG committee only sets the technical standards and does not deal with patents and intellectual property issues.

JPEG sounds similar to MPEG, they are part of the same subcommittee of ISO along with JBIG and MHEG, and they usually meet at the same place at the same time. But JPEG is different from MPEG, and has few or no common individual members. The two organizations also have different charters and requirements.

JPEG is used for still image compression, and JBIG for binary image compression (for example, faxes). MHEG is a software that is beginning to become widely recognized. MHEG's goal is to provide a multimedia/hypermedia objects that can be used in all applications, platforms, and services.
