Tutorial Home >Software >Office >Microsoft Project 2000 >Scheduling Project Tasks >Working with Milestones

Step 1:  What is a Milestone?

Open a Report
A milestone is a task that when completed, marks the end of a significant phase of the project. You can have as many milestones as you want in a project, and you can choose which tasks to designate as milestones. Milestones in Project have a duration of 0 days, because it is a marker, not an actual task. As needed, you can link your milestones, to show a direct relationship between two or more consecutive phases in your project.
Step 2:  Selecting a Milestone Task

How do you know which of your tasks is a milestone? Look at your project overall, and divide it into conceptual segments. Using a remodeling project as an example, milestones could be placed at the end of the design phase, contractor selection process, completion of structural changes, wiring, plumbing, and then at the end of the final detail/painting phase.
Step 3:  Creating a Milestone Task

Open a Report
After the last task in a phase of the project, or at the end of a project phase, create a task by typing a name for the task in the Task Name column. By default, Project will create a 1 day task.
  Step 4:  Positioning the Milestone

Open a Report
Drag the task bar so that it appears parallel to the end of the last task in the ending phase or group of tasks.
Step 5:  Marking as a Milestone

Open a Report
Right-click the task bar, and choose Task Information from the shortcut menu. In the Task Information dialog box, click the Advanced tab, and place a checkmark in the Mark as Milestone box. Click OK to close the dialog box. The task bar changes to a black diamond, accompanied by the date in mm/dd format.
  Step 6:  Moving Milestones

Open a Report
You can drag a milestone on the Gantt Chart or open the Task Information dialog box and change the Constrain Task date. When using the dialog box, click OK to close the box and see the milestone move to the new date. NOTE: If you drag the milestone to a non-working date, a prompt appears asking if you want to move the milestone to the next working date, or make that non-working day into a working day.
  Step 7:  Deleting a Milestone

Open a Report
Like any task, a milestone can be deleted by clicking the task number in the Task panel. The entire task row is selected, and you can press Delete to remove the task from the list.
  Step 8:  Displaying Only Milestones

Open a Report
If you want to see just your milestones on the Gantt Chart, choose Milestones from the Filtered For submenu in the Project menu. All non-milestone tasks disappear, and only milestones are displayed in the chart.
