  Step 1:  The Game

NBA Live 2000 is the seasonal upgrade to EA Sport's basketball franchise game. Using the same graphics model as 1999, the game still looks great and provides a dizzying array of play modes and options. Back for 2000 is Michael Jordan, who can augment your team's success or provide a worthy opponent in 1-on-1 play. The career mode now allows would-be general managers to coddle their teams through 25 years of play. Stadiums are all well modeled; there is even a blacktop court for play on the streets.
  Step 2:  How You Play

NBA Live 2000 can be played against a computer opponent or with live folks via the Internet. Arcade mode puts the player in the game, where, naturally, arcade skills become useful. Games and even entire seasons can be simulated, generating full statistics and box scores for each contest. Street court, 1-on-1, and legends play are also available. As a general manager, you can trade or cut players, or sign free agents from a pool. Furthermore, in-season roster updates are available on the EA Web site.
  Step 3:  Slam Dunk

The arcade mode will prove to be a challenge until the skill is developed, at which point the player gains a big advantage over the AI. The AI can be annoyingly non-aggressive, and sometimes feels as if you are playing against the percentages. Simulated games tend to yield expected results over a period of time. Still, the ambience is authentic, and the TV camera views provide a variety of perspectives. In fact, replay is available for awing over those precious in-your-face jams.
  Step 4:  The Bottom Line

There are other niceties that reflect the maturity of the NBA Live franchise. Pre-game lightshows reflect the crowd-pleasers performed at many stadiums. Facial skins can be replaced by your own, so you too can assume the look of Craig Ehlo when Jordan nails the poster-shot game winner over your head in the playoffs. Gameplay is refined, yet not perfect. In short, some games rely on glitz over substance, NBA Live 2000 is one of the rare few that provides both.
