| Before you begin, note that monitors vary by manufacturer and type. These instructions and accompanying images may not match your monitor exactly, but they should give you a basic idea of where to begin troubleshooting the problem. |

| The controls to adjust your monitor may be visible on the monitor itself, or they may have a cover over them. If needed, open the cover to see the controls. |

| Locate the Brightness control. You may be able to press a single button, or you may have to open a larger menu and choose Brightness. |

| Once you have located the monitor Brightness option, adjust it to your desired brightness as you view the display. |

| Next, using Contrast rather than the Brightness control, adjust the monitor's Contrast. |

| If you have problems only occasionally with the monitor screen being too dark, you may have a video driver problem. Click Start>Settings>Control Panel, select System, and from the System Properties window, choose the Device Manager tab. Click on Display Adapters, and choose your adapter. |

| From the display adapter's Properties window, click the Driver tab. To update the driver, click the Update Driver button and follow the onscreen instructions. |

| If the above steps do not solve your problem, determine the make and model of your video card, and then visit the manufacturer's website to see if an updated driver exists. This may be a newer, more effective driver than the one that came with your operating system. If a new driver exists, download and install it according to the instructions they provide. |
