  Step 1:  Start Search Engine

Mirroring software performs the same function as backup programs, except the files are placed in a regular file directory instead of a proprietary save set format. Start by searching the Internet for freeware mirroring software. Point your browser to your favorite search engine and enter the search text "Synchronize it!" the name of the program we want to find.
  Step 2:  Try Again

Sometimes search engines have problems with punctuation marks. We'll try the search again without the exclamation point.
  Step 3:  View Results

It's important to know your search engines for Usenet and for the web, when you're looking for freeware and shareware. These software packages are written and maintained on a budget, and their home base web sites move often, so searching is a good way to find them. The package we want comes from GreenSoft, and right now its home page in the Tripod domain. Click the GreenSoft home page link to go there.
Step 4:  View GreenSoft Home Page

Igor Green, author of "Synchronize It!" and other GreenSoft programs, is a C++ program developer. He wrote mirroring software as a means of maintaining duplicate copies of all his source programs. We'll use it to maintain archives, so some of the program-development options won't apply to us. Look around the GreenSoft home page, including the download instructions.
Step 5:  Install or Search Again

The rest of this tutorial contains more ideas about where to find shareware and freeware mirroring software. To skip to the download, see the tutorial "Install ‘Synchronize It!'" For more search ideas, point your browser to www.deja.com/Usenet and click Power Search. Here you can enter some words similar to what you're looking for, and change the Match criterion to "any" to begin your search.
  Step 6:  Complete Usenet Search

Deja's Usenet search engine is similar to regular web search engines, except that it searches Usenet discussions instead of web pages. Finish filling out the form by entering newsgroups into the "Forum" box. Because you put so many match words in the search text box, you'll get a lot of matches, so you'll want to organize results by confidence. Click Search when you've finished filling out the form.
  Step 7:  View Results

Often Internet searches and Usenet searches are done by trial and error. If you don't find the conversations you're looking for the first time, return to the power search screen and try slightly different match text, or other changes. When you are finished, close your browser.
