  Step 1:  Identify Location of Ports

The back of the notebook computer is a place you will have to go regularly. On the back of the notebook is located the ports and connectors for printing, communications and more.
  Step 2:  What Are Serial and Parallel?

Open a Report
The most common ports are the serial and parallel connectors. Shown here, the parallel connector (DB 25 pin connector) connects to your parallel printer. This will probably be recognized by Windows and begin the "Hardware Installation Wizard." The serial port (DB 9 connector) can be used for a variety of peripherals like modems, digital cameras and a host of other various peripherals.
  Step 3:  Locate USB/ Infrared Ports

USB (universal serial bus) is another of the high-speed options for communication and makes port management much easier when using multiple serial devices. Infrared is a forgotten technology to most. Although there are many uses for infrared currently one of the best interface uses has been with the Windows CE devices. Printing and other options are also available with infrared.
  Step 4:  Docking Up

Open a Report
A dock is a requirement on most of today's notebooks. However the dock is only used in specific office environments. The dock connector will probably generate a great deal of interest for a while.
  Step 5:  Connect Keyboard and More

Open a Report
There may also be two other connectors, one for your Keyboard/mouse and another for the video out jacks. These maybe in the form of RCA jacks or another DIN connector such as for the keyboard. When using video out, the display output and resolution may have to be changed.
