Step 1:  What Does "Proc Amp" Mean?

Proc amps were originally hardware devices that adjusted various aspects of a video picture. These aspects are hue, chroma, level, and setup. To access these functions, open the Effects dialog box and select Paint/Proc Amp. The proc amp functions are on the right.
  Step 2:  Hue

The hue adjustment is on the top of the Proc Amp section. It has a slider for adjustment and a place to type in numerical changes. Adjusting the "hue" changes the overall color cast of the image. You can make it "bluer" or "redder" or "greener." This is generally done to correct an image that is too blue or too orange and make it look more natural, but can also be used for effects.
  Step 3:  Chroma

The Chroma adjustment also has a slider and a numerical window. Moving the slider to the right increases the "saturation" or intensity of all colors. This can make washed out images appear better or give a rich "Technicolor" look that can enhance video.
  Step 4:  Level

Level changes the brightness of the lighter colors, or more accurately, the rate at which black becomes lighter and transitions into white. The effect of moving the slider to the right is to increase contrast by brightening the lighter sections of the image.
  Step 5:  Set-Up

Set-up is the value that determines how dark the blacks and other dark colors are. Moving this slider to the left while moving the "Level" to the right can increase contrast. Remember, a little here goes a long way.
