There are several ways to encode a music track into MP3 format, one of the easiest being AudioCatalyst by XING software.
  Step 2:  Audiocatalyst

Audiocatalyst was developed by XING. It can both read and play a CD, as well as encode the tracks into MP3 or WAV format.
  Step 3:  MP3 File Size

An average song in MP3 format is between 4 to 6 megabytes (4,000 to 6,000 Kilobytes), making this format ideal for storing to ZIP or CD-R, or even to your hard drive if you have the room available.
  Step 4:  WAV Format

Encoding CD tracks into the editable WAV format means you end up with a resulting 40 to 60Mb files. These can be played through WinAmp and added to a playlist, but they are not something you would want to save on your hard drive for long periods. If you are recording from a CD, record as MP3 to conserve space.
