Step 1:  Remember Your Time Limits

Although the players have been becoming smaller and smaller, the ultimate limitation will be your memory. The memory chips that hold the music are still fairly expensive, so you must remember that your time will be limited.

Most players come with 32 megabytes of memory on the board. This means you will have about 30 minutes of MP3 music. If you want to go to Window Media Format, you can get an hour. Most players allow for expansion so this almost a necessity.
Step 3:  Extend Your Range with Radio

Some players have recognized this memory limitation and have put FM tuners in their players. This will allow you to listen to stereo music after your playlist has begun to grow tiresome upon numerous repeats.
  Step 4:  Expansion Possibilities

If you want to make your player capable of playing for a longer time than it takes to get from LA to San Francisco by plane, you will have to get more memory. The current batches of memory chips are available in 32, 64, 96, and 128-megabyte sizes. Be sure to buy the right type (Smart Media or Compact Flash).
