  Step 1:  Adding the NIC

Open a Report
To add a laptop to a network you need a network interface card. Most laptops connect to networks via a PCMCIA card (PC card). These cards are about the size of a credit card and are inserted to a socket on the side of the laptop. A device called a dongle extends off the laptop and connects to the network.
Step 2:  Purchasing the PC Card

When purchasing a PC card for your network be certain that the network card is compliant with your network type. For example, don't buy a 10Base-T card if your network is using a 10Base2 network. The card you purchase must be compatible with the network you are joining.
  Step 3:  Installing the Card

With your laptop powered down, slide the card into an empty socket on your laptop. Power on the computer. If you are using Windows 98 or Windows 2000 Plug and Play will detect the card and install the necessary software drivers. If you are using Windows NT plug and play is not supported and you must manually add the NIC through Control Panel's Network applet.
  Step 4:  Adding Protocols

Open a Report
For your NIC to communicate on the network protocols must be added. To add a protocol, right-click Network Neighborhood and choose Properties. Click the Add button and choose Protocol. Add the protocol for your network. Use caution! The protocol you add must be the same protocol used by your network. In addition, the protocol may require additional configuring to work properly. If you are uncertain what attributes are required ask someone who knows!
