When the Tray Still Won't Open
Tutorial Home >Hardware >Storage and Drives >CD-R/CD-RW >How do I find out what to do if the CD-R tray still won't open? Tutorial Home >Hardware >Storage and Drives >CD-R/CD-RW >Troubleshooting CD-Rs & CD-RWs >When the Tray Still Won't Open | |

 | | Shutdown the PC, turn it off, disconnect the power, and remove the cover. Remember to ground yourself before placing your hands within the case. | | | |

 | | Remove the screws holding the CD drive in place. Disconnect the cables connected at the back of the drive – there should be one running from the power supply to the drive, one from the motherboard or hard drive to the CD drive, and possibly a wire running between your CD drive and your sound card. | | | |

 | | Place the CD drive on a flat, clean surface such as a tabletop, and insert an unfolded paperclip into the manual ejection switch (the hole located below or beside the CD drive tray) to see if this will prompt the tray to open). If it does open, extract the CD inside, if one is present. With the tray open, look to see if you can detect anything that may be preventing the tray from working normally. If so, try to resolve this. | | | |

 | | Reinstall the CD drive into its drive bay, reconnect the cables (and wire) you removed before. Screw the drive back into its mounting, being sure it's in evenly and securely. Replace the PC cover, reconnect the power, turn the PC on, and restart the machine. If the drive tray fails to work again, replace the drive with a working one. | |
