Upgrade to Windows Vista from within Windows XP

Use this option to install Windows Vista and retain your applications, files, and settings as they were in Windows XP.

Note: Internet access is recommended to complete these steps.

Note: Prior to upgrading the operating system to Windows Vista, run Upgrade Advisor to see if there are any compatibility issues that need to be addressed prior to the upgrade. It is recommended to resolve any compatibility issues prior to upgrading.

  1. With the computer started and running Windows XP, place the Windows Vista Upgrade disc in the CD\DVD drive. The disc automatically starts and an Install Windows screen appears. Click Install Now.

  2. In the Get important updates for installation dialog box, click Go online to get the latest updates for installation (recommended).

  3. The computer searches for installation updates.

  4. In the Type your product key for activation screen, enter the product key, and then click Next.

  5. In the Please read the license terms screen, check I accept the license terms, and then click Next.

  6. In the Which type of installation do you want screen, click Upgrade.

  7. In the Compatibility Report screen, click Next.

  8. Windows installs.

  9. The computer restarts.

  10. Windows prepares to start for the first time. This may take a few minutes.

  11. Installation completes.

  12. The computer restarts.

    Note: The following Out of Box Experience (OOBE) screens may vary slightly.

  13. In the Help protect Windows automatically screen, select Use recommended settings.

  14. In the Review your time and date settings screen, enter appropriate information and then click Next.

  15. In the Select your computer's current location screen, select the appropriate option.

  16. In the Thank You screen, click Start.

  17. Windows checks the computers performance. Depending on hardware, this process could take from 3 to 15 minutes to complete.

  18. Windows prepares the desktop.

  19. Windows Vista installation is complete.

  20. Any updated drivers and applications can be installed. It is recommended to update the antivirus definitions and perform Windows Updates.
