Why do some pictures not show up in Outlook Express e-mail after installing SP2?

If pictures worked on a particular e-mail prior to installing Service Pack 2 but no longer work, HTML Content Blocking may be preventing the pictures from appearing in order to protect your computer.

One technique that spammers and viruses use to target active e-mail users is to include external content, such as images, in HTML-email. When the e-mail calls out to the Web site that hosts the image, the "hit" can be recorded by the Web server and used to identify the recipient.

To preserve your privacy and prevent future attacks, Outlook Express now blocks external images and other external content in HTML mode.

To re-enable the images and external content in HTML e-mail, use the following steps.

  1. Open Outlook Express.

  2. In Outlook Express, from the Tools menu, click Options.

  3. In the Options dialog box, click the Security tab, and then click to clear the Block images and other external content in HTML e-mail check box.
