What are some troubleshooting scenarios with the Program Guide in Media Center?

Program Guide issues

I am unable to download the Program Guide.

  • You must have an Internet connection to be able to download the Program Guide. Make sure that you have configured the Internet connection correctly and that the connection is active, then re-attempt to download the Program Guide.

  • Check the Application Event Log for reported errors on the attempts to download the Program Guide. Logged errors will have "Windows Media Center Download" listed as the source.

I am not able to get any local listings.

  • Retry to access the listings again after a few hours. This could be due to problems with the listing provider.

The program times and names are incorrect in the Program Guide.

  • Check the time zone settings, as these may be incorrect. Correct the time zone, and then download the Program Guide again.

I changed the time zone but my Program Guide still displays incorrect data.

  • Download the Program Guide again.
  • Try to select a different TV Signal Provider.

My Program Guide lists several channels that I do not subscribe to.

  • Make sure that you selected the right TV provider. Also, there may be small differences between the listing displayed and the channels that you subscribe to. You can customize the Program Guide by selecting channels in the Settings menu.

Shared Channels

It is quite common that two TV networks share the same channel on a particular head-end, for example Channel A and Channel B - Channel A is available from 6:00 AM -6:00 PM and Channel B from 6:00 PM - 6:00 AM. Unfortunately, the data that Media Center receives (at least for U.S./Canada) does not filter out this information. By default, Media Center has no way of knowing when each network is actually broadcast. As a result, Media Center will pick one of these networks (the first one in the data feed) and only show programming information for that network.

This means that you may record programs that have incorrect programming information for them without knowing it. You will also not be able to accurately see what's on that channel using the Program Guide.

You have the option to specify which channel you want listed in the Program Guide by editing the channel lineup.

  1. Press the Windows Media Center Start button on the Media Center remote control.

  2. Press the MORE INFO button on the remote.

  3. Select Settings.

  4. Select TV.

  5. Select Guide.

  6. Select Edit Channels.

  7. Scroll down until you see a listing for shared channels.

  8. Click to clear the channel you do not want in the Program Guide.

  9. In the left pane, select Save.
