Malicious Software Removal Tool From the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE)

If for any reason you cannot boot into Windows, you can try to use the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) to run the Malicious Software Removal Tool.

To use the Malicious Software Removal Tool while in the WinRE, use the following steps:

  1. Boot to the Windows Vista backup media.

  2. On the Install Windows screen, click Next.

  3. On the Install Windows screen, select Repair your computer.

  4. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Next.

  5. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, select the appropriate operating system, and then click Next.

    Note: If controller drivers are needed, click Load Drivers.

  6. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.

  7. At the command prompt, type: mrt.exe, and then press the ENTER key.

  8. In the Malicious Software Removal Tool dialog box, click OK.

  9. In the End user license agreement dialog box, click to select Accept all terms of the preceding license agreement, and then click Next.

  10. In the Welcome to the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool dialog box, click Next.

  11. In the Scan type dialog box, select the appropriate scan type, and then click Next.

  12. The computer is scanned.

  13. In the Scan results dialog box, click Finish.
