Q: How do I verify which Windows XP Service Pack is installed?

A: When troubleshooting an issue, it may be important to know if a service pack has been installed on the computer. This can be checked in several places:

  • System Properties
    1. Open Control Panel.
      • In the Microsoft® Windows® XP default Start menu, click Control Panel.
      • In the Windows XP default classic Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

    2. In Control Panel, open the System Properties dialog box.
      • If the computer is in Category View, click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System.
      • If the computer is in Classic View, double-click the System icon.

  • Winver.exe - Running Winver.exe displays a dialog box where the service pack is listed.

    1. From the Start menu, click Run. In the Run dialog box, type: Winver.exe, and then click OK.

  • Registry - The service pack version can also be referenced in the registry value “CSDVersion”,

    1. From the Start menu, click Run. In the Run dialog box, type: Regedit, and then click OK.

    2. In Registry Editor, locate the following registry key:
      HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion.

    3. If Service Pack 1 has been installed, this should display “Service Pack 1” in the data column for the "CSDVersion" listing.
