"This Version of GoBack Vgobackd.vxd Doesn''t Match the DOS Version" Message

Affected Products: Software
Affected Operating Systems: Windows® 95, Windows® 98 , Windows® 98 SE, Windows® Me

ISSUE: When the computer is started, you may receive a message "This version of GoBack vgobackd.vxd doesn't match the DOS version, correct this in DOS. Press any key to continue."

RESOLUTION: There are two resolutions to this issue. The first resolution is the recommended method.

Recommended resolution:

Unhook, remove, and reinstall Gateway GoBack.

To unhook GoBack from the master boot record (MBR), perform the following steps:

  1. Press the CTRL+ALT+G keys during startup, before the GoBack splash screen.

Note: It may be necessary to hold down the CTRL and ALT keys and press the G key several times. On some computers the CTRL and ALT key combination may not be recognized if they are pressed before the keyboard is recognized. Wait until the Gateway logo is displayed before holding down the keys.

  2. After this message appears on the screen, press the F key:

"If you are never able to reach the GoBack bootup screen, you have the opportunity now to unchain GoBack from your MBR sector. WARNING: This procedure should be done only as a last resort as data loss may occur. It is recommended that you disable GoBack from the bootup screen (if possible) if you suspect compatibility issues related to GoBack. Press the F key to force GoBack to unhook itself from your MBR or any other key to reboot your computer."

  3. After pressing F, the following message appears. Press any key.

"Goback has successfully removed itself from the MBR and BPB sectors on disk #1. If you were unable to run GoBack on this computer, please report this problem to Adaptec technical support. Also indicate processor type and computer/motherboard make and model. Press any key to reboot your computer."

To continue with the removal, perform the following steps.

  1. When the computer restarts and prompts whether you want to enable GoBack again:

    • If the Gobackio.bin file is corrupt, the following message appears. Click No:

"GoBack is currently Disabled. Would you like to re-enable GoBack?"

    • If the Gobackio.bin file is not corrupt, the following message appears. Click Cancel:

"GoBack has detected an active GOBACKIO.BIN file on disk 1, but it appears as though the MBR has been modified by some utility other than GoBack. GoBack can either be enabled or uninstalled now."

Note: While it is not recommended, you may enable GoBack at this point. GoBack history was erased when GoBack was unhooked from the MBR, and it may take a long period of time to enable GoBack.

  2. From the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

  3. In Control Panel, click the Add/Remove Programs icon.

  4. In the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box, select GoBack, and then click Add/Remove.

  5. The GoBack Setup dialog box prompts whether to remove GoBack. Click OK to restart the computer.

  6. The computer restarts.

  7. Click OK.

  8. GoBack history is removed from the hard disk drive.

  9. The computer restarts.

  10. Click OK.

  4. On the next screen, select Option 1 - MS-DOS Prompt.

  5. At the command prompt, remove System Restoration CD Disc 1, and then place System Restoration CD Disc 3 in the CD/DVD drive.

  6. At the command prompt, type: Cd\Goback, and then press ENTER.

  7. At the command prompt, type Gb_prog /Disable, and then press ENTER.

  8. The message You are about to disable GoBack on your drives. All historical information will be cleared, thus you will no longer be able to retrieve files from the past. Are you sure you want to proceed? appears. Click Yes.

Note: After GoBack has been successfully disabled, you are given the option of re-enabling GoBack each time you start unless you remove GB_PROG.EXE from your Autoexec.bat file. To re-enable GoBack, you may type "GB_PROG /I" from MS-DOS. The message Your computer will now be restarted without GoBack drivers being loaded appears. Click OK.
