"Fatal Exception OE Has Occurred 0028:Bff88112" Shutting Down Windows 98 SE

ISSUE: When you try to shut down the computer, you see a blue screen with the error message "A fatal exception OE has occurred at 0028:bff88112."

RESOLUTION: Use the following steps to resolve this issue.

Download and install the Fataloepatch.exe patch, located on the Gateway Web site at ftp://esupport:vImvF88@ftp.gateway.com/pub/gw-sold_ms-apps/win_98/fataloepatch.exe.

Note: Because the patch updates system files and requires the computer to be restarted, save all open documents and close all programs before installation.

  1. Connect to the Internet. In the Location or Address box of your Web browser, type: ftp://esupport:vImvF88@ftp.gateway.com/pub/gw-sold_ms-apps/win_98/fataloepatch.exe. Press the ENTER key.

  2. In the File Download dialog box, click Save this program to disk, and then click OK.

  3. In the Save As dialog box, click Save. Remember the location where you have saved the file.

  4. After the download is finished, in the Download complete dialog box, click Close.

  5. On your computer, locate and double-click the Fataloepatch.exe file that you have downloaded.

  6. In the WinZip Self Extractor dialog box, click Unzip. Three files are unzipped to a new folder, C:\Gwpatch\Fataloe. When complete, click Close.

  7. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Windows Explorer.

  8. In Windows Explorer, browse to the C:\Gwpatch\Fataloe folder, and then double-click Fatal OE Patch.

  9. Read the information found in the Notice dialog box, and then click Accept.

  10. In the Fatal OE Patch dialog box, click Install Fix.

    Note: If Norton AntiVirus is not installed, you will receive a "You do not have Norton Antivirus installed. Patch aborting" message, and the Fatal OE patch will not be installed. In the Error dialog box, click OK. Norton AntiVirus must be installed before running the Fatal OE patch.

  11. The patch installs. When complete, click OK.

  12. Click Start, and then click Shut Down. In the Shut Down Windows dialog box, click Restart, and then click OK.

    Note: If any complications arise after the patch is installed, double-click Fatal OE Patch again, and then click Uninstall Fix to return to the original configuration.

Download the Windows IDE Hard Drive Cache Package using Windows Update.

  1. Connect to the Internet.

  2. Click Start, and then click Windows Update.

    Note: If Windows Update is not found on the Start menu, click Start, and then click Run. In the Run dialog box, in the Open text box, type: Wupdmgr.exe. Click OK.

  3. After the Web browser page has completely loaded, click Product Updates.

  4. In the Recommended Updates section, click Windows IDE Hard Drive Cache Package, and then click Download.
