Computer Locks Up When Disconnecting From The Internet

Affected Products: Desktop Computers, Destination® PCs, Servers
Affected Operating Systems: Windows® 95, Windows® 98

ISSUE: When attempting to disconnect from the Internet, the computer may stop responding and must be started. This occurs regardless of the Internet Service Provider (ISP).

RESOLUTION: This is probably occurring because the WSOCK32.DLL and/or WINSOCK.DLL files have been overwritten by a communication software package, or the files may be corrupt. To resolve the issue, use the following steps to extract the file from your Windows CD:

  1. Place the Windows CD in the CD/DVD drive. Close any windows that automatically open.

  2. From the Start menu, click Run. In the Run dialog box, type: SFC. Click OK.

  3. In the System File Checker window, select Extract one file from disk.

  4. In the Specify the file you would like to restore dialog box, type: Wsock32.dll. Click Start.

  5. In the Restore from text box, type: D:\Win98 (where D is the drive letter of your CD/DVD drive). Click OK.

  6. In the Backup file dialog box, click Skip.

  7. Files copy.

  8. In the File extracted dialog box, click Yes to restart the computer.

  9. Repeat steps 1-8 to extract the remaining file.
