Create Overlay Failed Error Watching DVDs in Windows 2000

ISSUE: When watching DVDs in Microsoft® Windows® 2000 on the M350WVN or M305CRV notebook computers using extended desktop, the following error message may display: "Create Overlay failed. Please lower your screen resolution or color depth and try again."

This issue only occurs if an external monitor is connected and extended desktop is enabled in display properties. If extended desktop is not enabled, this issue does not occur.

RESOLUTION: This issue only occurs if using extended desktop in Windows® 2000. If you are not using extended desktop in Windows 2000, you do not have this specific issue. Continue troubleshooting. This specific issue does not apply to Windows XP.

This issue occurs because of a video solution limitation on the M350WVN and M305CRV notebook computer. To workaround the problem, turn off extended desktop and watch the DVD on your mobile LCD screen.

Use the following steps to turn off extended desktop:

  1. Right-click in an empty area of the desktop, and then select Properties.

  2. In Display Properties window, click the Settings tab.

  3. On the Settings tab, click to clear the check mark from Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor, and then click OK.
