"Trapped Exception in TPKCOPYFORM" Error Messages with Gateway Update Utility in Windows 98

ISSUE: When attempting to install or run version 3.2.0.8 of the Gateway Update Utility, part number 9524786, in Microsoft® Windows® 98, "Trapped Exception in TPKCOPYFORM" error messages may appear.

RESOLUTION:

  1. Remove the Gateway Update Utility and Gateway Drivers and Applications Recovery from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

    1. From the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
    2. In Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
    3. In the Add/Remove Programs Properties window, click Gateway Update Utility (if listed), and then click Add/Remove.
    4. Complete the removal process.
    5. In the Add/Remove Programs Properties window, click Gateway Drivers and Applications Recovery (if listed), and then click Add/Remove.
    6. Complete the removal process.
    7. Close all programs.

  2. Delete the contents of the C:\Program Files\Gateway\HPA and C:\Program Files\Gateway\SRCD folders from the hard drive.

    1. From the Start menu, point to Programs, and then click Windows Explorer.
    2. In Windows Explorer, in the Exploring - (C:) window, click the plus (+) sign next to (C:), click the plus (+) sign next to Program Files, and then click the plus (+) sign next to Gateway.
    3. Click to select the HPA folder, and then from the File menu, click Delete.
    4. In the Confirm Folder Delete dialog box, click Yes.
    5. Click to select the SRCD folder, and then from the File menu, click Delete.
    6. In the Confirm Folder Delete dialog box, click Yes.
    7. Close all programs.

  3. Double-click to run the gtwupd.exe file that you originally downloaded from the Internet to install the Gateway Update Utility. Files extract to the C:\Cabs folder.

  4. Run the Gateway Update Utility to install and test for error messages.

    1. From the Start menu, click Run.
    2. In the Run dialog box, type: C:\Cabs\Gtwupd\Gwmeinst.exe. Click OK.
    3. If Trapped Exception error messages re-appear, close them, and then continue to the next step. If there are no error messages, the issue should be resolved. Run the Gateway Update Utility by clicking on Start, Program Files, Gateway Utilities, and then GW Recovery Program.

  5. Download file GUU98FIX.EXE from the Gateway Web site.

  6. Double-click to run the GUU98FIX.EXE that was downloaded. Files will be extracted to the C:\Cabs\GUU98FIX folder.

  7. Run C:\Cabs\GUU98FIX\FIXGUU.exe to extract necessary files to the C:\Program Files\Gateway folder.

    1. From the Start menu, click Run.
    2. In the Run dialog box type: C:\Cabs\GUU98FIX\FIXGUU.exe. Click OK.
    3. Files extract to the C:\Program Files\Gateway\HPA or C:\Program Files\Gateway\SRCD folders.

  8. From the Start menu, point to Program Files, Gateway Utilities, and then click GW Recovery Program to start the Gateway Update Utility.

    Note: If the GW Recovery Program is not listed, run C:\Program Files\Gateway\HPA\GWMenu.exe to start the Gateway Update Utility.

    1. From the Start menu, click Run.
    2. In the Run dialog box type: C:\Program Files\Gateway\HPA\GWMenu.exe. Click OK.
