E6610, FX530, DX430 and DX420 Rear Cooling Fan Runs Continuously at a High Rate of Speed

ISSUE: The Gateway® E6610, FX530, DX430 or DX420 computer's rear cooling fan runs continuously at a high rate of speed and does not stop or slow down.

RESOLUTION: The resolution differs depending on the model of your computer.

  • For E6610 and FX530 computers: Download and install BIOS version 0268 or later. The BIOS is found on the the Gateway Web site as filename 9537847.exe.

    Note: If the new BIOS does not fix the fan issue, contact Gateway technical support.

  • For DX420 and DX430 computers: Download and install BIOS version 386 or later. The BIOS is found on the the Gateway Web site as filename 9539129.exe. After updating the BIOS, perform the following steps to set the fan control to Fan Profile 2.

    1. Turn on or restart the computer.

    2. Immediately press the F2 key at one second intervals until the BIOS Setup Utility (System Setup) opens.

    3. The mouse does not work in the BIOS Setup Utility. Use the RIGHT ARROW (cursor) key to select Advanced.

    4. In the Advanced menu, use the DOWN ARROW key to select Fan Control, and then press the ENTER key.

    5. In the Fan Control menu for Fan Profile Select, Profile 1 is selected. Press ENTER to open the option dialog box.

    6. Use the DOWN ARROW to select Profile 2, and then press ENTER.

    7. To save the changes and exit the BIOS Setup Utility, press the F10 key.

    8. When prompted to exit saving changes, press the Y key. The computer restarts.
