Modem Driver Does Not Automatically Load When Reinstalling Windows From the Recovery Partition

ISSUE: After reinstalling Windows Vista™ from the Recovery partition, the modem driver does not automatically load. It appears in Device Manager under Other Devices as a PCI Simple Communications Controller with a splat.

RESOLUTION: Use the following steps to resolve this issue.

  1. From the Windows Vista default Start menu, in the Start Search field, type: Device Manager, and then press the ENTER key.

  2. In the User Account Control dialog box, click Continue.

  3. In Device Manager, in the Other devices field, verify that PCI Simple Communications Controller is listed.

  4. In Device Manager, from the File menu click Exit.

  5. From the Windows Vista default Start menu, in the Start Search field, type: Recovery, and then press the ENTER key.

  6. In the Gateway (or eMachines) Recovery Center window, click Hardware.

  7. In the Hardware window, click Device driver recovery.

  8. In the Device driver recovery window, click Communications devices and system components.

  9. In the Communications devices and system components window, click PCI Soft Data Fax Modem with SmartCP.

  10. In the Installing selected device driver software window, click Next.

  11. In the Congratulations window, click Finish.

  12. In Device Manager, verify that PCI Soft Data Fax Modem with SmartCP is listed in the Modems category. Close the Device Manager window.
