Gateway M460 and M360 CD-ROM Drive Operates at 10X Instead of 24X

ISSUE: On the Gateway M460 and M360 notebook computers, the CD-ROM drive operates at a 10X speed instead of 24X.

RESOLUTION: Use the following steps to change the CD-ROM drive from PIO to DMA mode in Device Manager.

  1. Open Control Panel.

    • If you are using the Windows XP default Start menu, from the Start menu, click Control Panel.
    • If you are using the Classic Start Menu, from the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

  2. In Control Panel, open System.

    • If you are in Category View, click Performance and Maintenance, and then click the System icon.
    • If you are in Classic View, double-click the System icon.

  3. In the System Properties window, click the Hardware tab.

  4. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager.

  5. In Device Manager, click the plus sign (+) next to IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.

  6. Click Secondary IDE Channel.

  7. From the Action menu, click Properties.

  8. In the Secondary IDE Channel Properties dialog box, click the Advanced Settings tab.

  9. On the Advanced Settings tab, change the Transfer Mode From PIO Only to DMA if available.

  10. Click OK, and then close all windows.
