E-4300, E-6300 Does Not Wake On Lan When a Packet is Sent Across the Network
Affected Products: E-Series Computers, Desktop Computers Affected Operating Systems: Not OS DependentISSUE: When sending a Wake On Lan (WOL) request across the network, the E-4300 and E-6300 computers fail to respond. There is not any link light activity at the computer or the hub. The computers do not respond to any WOL commands or requests. RESOLUTION: The BIOS Setup Utility must be updated to latest version available. If the latest BIOS is not currently installed, you can download the latest BIOS from the Gateway Web site.
Use the following steps to determine which BIOS version is currently installed.
- From the Start menu, click Shut Down. In the Shut Down Windows dialog box, select Restart, and then click Yes.
- As soon as the computer restarts, on your keyboard, repeatedly press the F2 key to enter the BIOS Setup Utility.
- In the BIOS Setup Utility, on the Main tab, look for the BIOS version line. The version should list the following: SE91510J.15A.1990.xxxx.xxxx (where x is variable characters). The correct BIOS will have "1990" or higher listed as the number in the middle of the sequence. If it does not, you need to update the BIOS.
- Press the F10 key to exit the BIOS Setup Utility.
The installation steps for updating the BIOS are included in the readme.txt file that is downloaded with the BIOS. Please refer to those instructions.
After the BIOS is updated, enter into the BIOS Setup Utility, and then go to the Power section of the BIOS. Wake On Lan From S5 needs to be changed from Stay Off to Power On. Save the changes, and then restart the computer.
- From the Start menu, click Shut Down. In the Shut Down Windows dialog box, select Restart, and then click Yes.
- As soon as the computer restarts, on your keyboard, repeatedly press the F2 key to enter the BIOS Setup Utility.
- In the BIOS Setup Utility, on the Main screen, press the DOWN ARROW key to select Enter System Setup, and press the ENTER key.
- Press the RIGHT ARROW key to select Power, and then press ENTER.
- Press the DOWN ARROW key to select Wake On Lan From S5, and then press ENTER.
- Press the DOWN ARROW key to select Power On, and then press ENTER.
- Press the F10 key to save your changes and exit.
- Press the Y key to continue. The computer will now restart.
Note: For computers with the SE91510J.15A.1990.xxxx.xxxx BIOS already installed, you will only need to make these changes within the BIOS Setup Utility and then restart the computer.
Note: You will need to perform a complete computer shutdown and restart for these changes to be activated.
Once the BIOS has been updated, you may need to make a few changes within the network card properties. Use the following steps to make these changes.
- Open Control Panel.
- If you are using the Windows XP default Start menu, from the Start menu, click Control Panel.
- If you are using the Classic Start Menu, from the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- In Control Panel, open System.
- If you are in Category View, click Performance and Maintenance, and then click the System icon.
- If you are in Classic View, double-click the System icon.
- In the System Properties window, click the Hardware tab.
- On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager.
- In Device Manager, click the plus sign (+) next to Network adapters.
- Click Marvell Yukon 88E8050 PCI-E ASF Gigabit Ethernet Controller, and then from the Action menu, click Properties.
- In the Marvell Yukon 88E8050 PCI-E ASF Gigabit Ethernet Controller Properties window, click the Advanced tab, click Wake Up Capabilities, and then change the value to Magic Packet and Pattern Match.
- Click the Power Management tab, and then click to select Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby. Click OK.
- In the System Settings Change dialog box, click Yes to restart the computer.
Note: Once these changes are made, if sudden AC power loss occurs, you may need to reconfigure the Windows Settings once again in order for Wake On LAN to function correctly.
