"INVALID_WORK_QUEUE_ITEM" Error Message After Installing Windows XP Without Service Pack 2

Affected Products: Notebook Computers
Affected Operating Systems: Windows® XP

ISSUE: After installing Windows XP without Service Pack 2 (SP2) on a Gateway M210 notebook computer, the first restart generates a blue screen error message.

INVALID_WORK_QUEUE_ITEM
STOP 0x00000096

This issue only occurs when you are installing your own copy of Windows XP, and are not using the operating system software provided by Gateway. The computer starts properly to Safe mode after receiving the issue. Reinstalling Windows without SP2 makes the issue reoccur.

RESOLUTION: Gateway provided Windows XP Service Pack 2 with the original configuration.

Option 1: To resolve this issue, reinstall the Gateway-provided operating system.

Option 2: Windows XP can be installed using the non-Gateway provided copy of the operating system, and then Service Pack 2 can be installed from Safe mode.

Note: Service Pack 2 can be downloaded from the Microsoft Web site. It may be necessary for the network installation package of SP2 to be downloaded on another computer and then burned to a CD for it to be installed on the M210 computer that is having issues.
